The organized destruction of “life unworthy of living” during the Second World War
Between 1939 and 1945, more than 10,000 children in the German Reich became victims of murder and human experimentation. By deceiving their relatives, they were, among other things, killed by medical staff in “children’s special wards” through food deprivation, neglect or poisoning.
There were 30 of these “specialized departments” across the Reich – including in Berlin and Vienna. While there was hardly any way for those affected to escape these measures, after 1945 the perpetrators often styled themselves as victims - with the argument that by killing the children they had made a sacrifice to the leader, people and fatherland.
