The works of Juan Pablo Macías deal with anarchism as a (lived) utopia of a world free of domination and as a global, humanitarian and planetary concern. He combines the radical ideas of European anarchists of modernity with the practice of indigenous cultures and addresses aspects such as agricultural disobedience and ritualized soundscapes.
Juan Pablo Macías discovered the threatened anarchist Biblioteca Social Reconstruir in Mexico City in 2009. After its closure, he organized a meeting on the anarchist movement in Mexico in 2010, whose contributions were published in the first issue of the magazine TIEMPO MUERTO #0.
Since 2012, Macías has curated TIEMPO MUERTO as a borderless platform for anarchist texts and actions from all over the world. The magazine addresses different aspects of anarchism - from private property to land, from culture to nature, from agriculture to banks, from seeds to historical texts.
The latest issue #7, published to coincide with the exhibition in Berlin, is dedicated to the relationship between anarchism and pagan beliefs.
The exhibition shows for the first time all issues of TIEMPO MUERTO as well as accompanying videos that were created during Macías' research on various continents and celebrate cultures of a life free of domination. Macías sees the coexistence of art, institutions and anarchist thought as a dynamic unity and strives to discover lasting wisdom and memories hidden in existing systems of representation.
