Johanna Reich's exhibition Linguphoria offers fascinating insights into the interaction between humans, machines and language.
Since 2018, Johanna Reich has been intensively studying language models and neural networks, and in this exhibition she is devoted to the question of how images can be translated into spoken and written language - and vice versa, how language can be transferred into visual forms.
In Linguphoria, Reich uses artificial intelligence (AI) to develop a new type of visual language based on her personal synesthesia. The works on display include hybrid ink paintings from the Aevorìs/Dancing Islands series, in which AI-analyzed traces of color are transformed into poems.
These poems, written in a language created by the artist together with the AI, appear as luminous words behind abstract color compositions.
Another central work in the exhibition is the Phantasma and Signs series, in which Reich takes the opposite approach: texts are used to generate images.
These hybrid works consist of a combination of video, acrylic paint and ink, which are projected onto dark, multifaceted canvases and form constantly changing paintings.
The works address central questions about authorship and aesthetics in AI-generated art and make these the core of the artistic debate.
Reich's works not only illuminate the technological transformation of language and image, but also the far-reaching effects of these developments on our thinking and our understanding of art and the world.
With Linguphoria, Johanna Reich invites you to a profound and visually impressive exploration of the interactions between human creativity and machine intelligence.
