he "Christmas Oratorio" by Johann Sebastian Bach is a collection of six cantatas that he composed for the holidays of the Christmas Festival Circle. Each cantata is intended for a specific day of Christmas.



Each cantata has its own musical structure and deals with different aspects of the Christmas story, from the promise of the Messiah to the adoration of the shepherds and the wise men from the East.


The six cantatas of the “Christmas Oratorio” are:


  • Cantata: On Christmas Day (December 24th)
  • Cantata: On Boxing Day (December 25th)
  • Cantata: On the Third Day of Christmas (December 26th)
  • Cantata: On the Sunday after New Year (January 1st)
  • Cantata: On the Sunday after New Year (January 6th)
  • Cantata: On the Feast of the Epiphany (Epiphany) (January 6)
