Event for International Provenance Research Day
During short tours and a panel discussion with external experts, provenance researchers from the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg (SPSG) will address a little-noticed topic: the relationship between the palace administration and the art trade in isolated West Berlin.
- How was the post-war rebuilding of Charlottenburg Palace successfully completed?
- What opportunities did the West Berlin art market offer, and where did further acquisitions come from?
- What impetus did the "German Art Trade in Charlottenburg Palace" fair, held in the palace's orangery in the 1980s, provide?
In short tours, Dr. Ulrike Schmiegelt-Rietig (SPSG), Dr. Benjamin Sander (SPSG), and Dr. des. Sylva van der Heyden (Friends of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens) will present the results of their research. Using selected examples, they will demonstrate the trajectories of works of art and describe how to trace them.
Afterwards, they invite you to a discussion in the palace chapel, where they will discuss the acquisition practices of the museum and collector world in West Berlin with Dr. Sabine Meister (Bröhan Museum) and Dr. Wolfgang Schöddert (Berlinische Galerie).
The short tours will be held several times in parallel, so that all participants can familiarize themselves with all the exhibited areas. The discussion is scheduled for 6-7 p.m.
The event fee includes the entire event and admission to the Old Palace.
