“Dalarna” is the title of the critically acclaimed CD and suite of the same name written by saxophonist and composer Birgitta Flick for Lina Nyberg, woodwind players Nico Lohmann and Silke Eberhard and their quartet from Berlin.

The CD was released in 2016 by Double Moon Records. Thanks to the Elsa Neumann scholarship from the City of Berlin and the University of the Arts, Birgitta Flick had the opportunity to get to know and immerse herself in Swedish folk music – especially the pastoral music and choral singing from Dalarna – which became a great source of inspiration for her music-making.

Some of the compositions in the suite are based directly on recordings from the Svenskt Visarkiv and the folkmusikens hus in Rättvik. Others are freely inspired by all the impressions Birgitta gathered during her research, listening and talking to the musicians she met and from the landscape of Dalarna.

During this evening, Birgitta Flick, Lina Nyberg and James Banner will come together again to experiment with music from “Dalarna” and other compositions by Birgitta, taking an improvisational approach as they explored it in 2022 at the invitation of the Svenskt Visarkiv at the Stockholm Jazz Festival in Scenkonstmuseet. The music will also be brought into contact with more recent and completely new music by Birgitta, which is also inspired by the svenskt visarkiv's collection.

InSpirit - Jazz as a spiritual music experience in the Memorial Church

For many years, the InSpirit series has shaped the summer in the Memorial Church: the combination of contemporary jazz music and spiritual content in a church space is unique in Berlin in this form. The famous blue light of the stained glass windows creates an incomparable atmosphere for enjoying jazz as a spiritual music experience. Well-known jazz musicians from Germany and abroad organize the evenings of the series together with theologians.

The artistic director of InSpirit is the organist of the Memorial Church, Sebastian Heindl. He not only brings his personal enthusiasm for contemporary jazz to the selection of the invited musicians, but also plays the large organ or the Hammond organ himself on some evenings.
