In April 1782, the first imperial "harmony" was created in Vienna, consisting of "nothing but wind instruments" - two oboes, clarinets, bassoons and horns each. This marked the beginning of a fashionable wave of wind music at the European courts that lasted for over half a century. Hardly any court of rank would have done without its own wind ensemble. The musicians not only created a new genre, but also ensured a flourishing of chamber music, which continues to delight audiences with wit and esprit to this day.
