In her series of paintings, the painter Helga von Loewenich encounters the poems of the poet Selma Meerbaum, who was born in Czernowitz in 1924 and died in a German labor camp in 1942. In her works, Helga von Loewenich captures the imagery of the young poet's poetry, creating a unique dialogue between fine art and poetry. The painter's color compositions reflect the creative power and liveliness of the poems.




"I want to touch the sky with my hands" - Vernissage with pictures by the Berlin artist Helga von Loewenich on the poems of the Jewish poet Selma Meerbaum.


With the Selma Meerbaum anniversary year, the Tiergarten Protestant community commemorates the poet who was born in Czernowitz 100 years ago and fell victim to the Shoah in 1942. She left behind 57 poems that are now part of world literature.

Painter Helga von Loewenich captures the imagery of the young poet's poetry in her works and thus creates a unique dialogue between fine art and poetry. The painter's color compositions reflect the creative power and liveliness of the poems.

Helga von Loewenich, born in 1943, studied art in Nuremberg, Munich and Jerusalem and has had numerous exhibitions at home and abroad. Her artistic work is determined by the visual dialogue with works of poetry and music.

Literature professor and author Dr. Petro Rychlo from the University of Chernivtsi (Ukraine) is considered an acknowledged expert on Selma Meerbaum's poetry. He will be present and will give an expert introduction to her work in his lecture.


The exhibition can be viewed in the Heilandskirche until the end of October: Wednesday 12 – 18 o’clock and Saturday 13 – 15 o’clock.
