Agriculture in a changing climate

Pre-fossil agriculture in Europe was a tough time, as Andreas Springer-Heinze impressively describes in his book about the agricultural economy and former living conditions in the countryside.

Andreas Springer-Heinze:
"Instead of picturesque idylls, we should bear in mind the brutal conditions. The life of the rural population in Europe was characterised by overwork. Large families, high infant mortality, illiteracy, periodic hunger. Living conditions were miserable....Until the 20th century, rural existence was nothing but hard labour for most people, with a monotonous diet".

We will therefore not be able to simply flip the switch from "unsustainable" to "sustainable" agriculture. Instead, the author emphasises: "The principle of evolution is adaptation. As global warming cannot be stopped, the agricultural sector will have to adapt for better or worse. Adaptation is the real driver of transformation."

The author discusses three concrete fields of action for such maxims:

  • a "climate-smart" agricultural sector that relies on digitalisation
  • the promotion of a soil-independent and water-saving form of agriculture
  • the expansion of value creation for CO2 sinks
