This evening, the focus is on two marginalized representatives of the Enlightenment. Sara Levy (1761–1854) played an important role in the German Enlightenment as a hostess of tea parties in Berlin.
The emancipated Jew and accomplished harpsichordist also collected important musical pieces. The Academy of Early Music Berlin will play works by the Bach family, which Levy rediscovered and whose performance she promoted.
Selected poems by Phillis Wheatley (around 1753–1784) will also be read. Wheatley, who was abducted from West Africa and enslaved as a child, is considered the first black author in the USA. In her poems, she criticized racism, oppression and the transatlantic slave trade.
