Gregor Gysi "One life is not enough" The autobiography Gregor Gysi shaped left-wing thinking and became one of its most important protagonists. Here he tells of his many lives: as a lawyer, politician, author, presenter and family man.
His autobiography is a history book that brings the shocks and extremes, the plans and disappointments of the 20th century to life in a very personal way.
Hardly any other German politician was so reviled, hardly any fought his way through the thicket of hostility so successfully - to become a recognized celebrity: In his autobiography, Gregor Gysi talks about his childhood and youth, describes his path to becoming a lawyer, gives insights into his relationship with dissidents and the areas of tension at the top of the party and parliamentary group.
Above all, however, he reports on the astonishing turn his life took in the autumn of 1989:
The lawyer becomes a politician. "I never wanted to just run away," says Gysi, and in doing so he gets to the core of his being: tolerating contradictions. A life and a family history that leads from Russia to Rhodesia, into a day-to-day courtroom life with murderers and thieves, and which includes praise from Lenin and Nobel Prize winner Doris Lessing.
"It's amazing what has to happen so that one's own life can come into being at some point." Gregor Gysi "Gregor Gysi is probably the most amusing and quick-witted, and also the most intellectually agile politician to have entered the German public stage in living memory. Without this lawyer, who already enjoyed (literally enjoyed) a reputation for a certain cheekiness in the GDR era (...)." DIE ZEIT
The event will be moderated by journalist Hans-Dieter Schütt.
