A laundress who dreams of great heroic deeds, in the Komödie am Kurfürstendamm in the Ernst-Reuter-Saal
Clown Hanna is an existential player. Her stories – wordless, but full of babble – are tragicomic metaphors for our quest for happiness. Although Hanna is spared no adversity, she never falls victim – to the delight of the audience.
She gives it her all: clumsy and angry, twisted and crazy, touching and poetic. Hanna creates an absurd universe in which she, like a kind of Donna Quixote, fights new windmills. She fails – but does so magnificently.
Disheveled and eccentric, Hanna doesn't have an easy life as a laundress. Unruly clothespins, treacherous clotheslines, a washtub with dizzying drops, and a filthy pile of laundry can only be overcome with the utmost cunning.
Her only ray of hope is her book about the heroic deeds of Joan of Arc. Without hesitation, she would trade her arduous life for adventure, fame, and glory. Dream and reality merge. The washtub becomes a warship, the pile of laundry a warhorse, and Joanna's trousers "fly from the sky" and elevate her to knighthood: Long live Joan of Arc! In the absence of foreign conquerors, she promptly declares war on her bitterest enemy: the "giant pile of dirty laundry." Amidst all this confusion, there is only one certainty: Hanna isn't fat—the mirror is too small.
After 44 years of touring and over 4,000 performances in 35 countries, Gardi Hutter can be seen once again in Berlin on September 11 and 12 at the Komödie am Kurfürstendamm in the Ernst-Reuter-Saal.
