Private photo albums of Germans in the »Osteineinsatz« and the collective memory of the Second World War
They lie in attics of residential buildings and on flea market counters, can be purchased online, and viewed in archives: private photo albums are tangible testimonies of how Germans experienced World War II and how they wanted it to be remembered. Some albums, particularly those related to the Holocaust, have attracted attention in exhibitions or publications. Yet, research has so far only addressed them in a rudimentary way.
