The use of the main building of the Hamburger Bahnhof always adapted to the historical circumstances. As a place of assembly, debate and transformation, the forum today invites the public to think along about new concepts for the museum.
In the early 20th century it served as a museum for construction and transport, as a ruin from World War II it was located on the demarcation line between East and West Berlin.
After the wall came down, it developed from being a squatted artist: inner house in the 1980s into a pop-up exhibition space until it opened in 1996 as the location of the National Gallery.
The archive exhibition is supplemented by a room for participatory and discursive programs, e.g. with film interviews of people associated with the Hamburger Bahnhof from the 1980s to the present day.
Admission to the “Hamburger Bahnhof Forum” and its events is free.
