For Fontaines D.C., 2024 could hardly have been more successful: With their latest album Romance, they rocked the stages of legendary festivals and thrilled tens of thousands of fans on an extensive European tour.
The start of their career was only a few years ago: in 2019, their debut album Dogrel caused a stir with a striking mix of poetic lyrics and dark post-punk.
The second album A Hero's Death in 2020 showed a more thoughtful side of the band, while Skinty Fia (2022) enriched their sound with electronic elements.
Now Romance finally marks their rise to the big stages around the world. Written during a support tour for the Arctic Monkeys, the band members initially developed their ideas separately before renowned producer James Ford (Blur, Depeche Mode) brought everything together. The result is an album that sounds more mature and international than ever before.
While Skinty Fia was still dealing with life between Dublin and London, the new songs show the self-confident demeanor of a band that enjoys its global rock star status - with a pinch of irony, of course.
Drawing on the aesthetics of the 90s, Fontaines D.C. skilfully plays with their growing popularity. Songs like the powerful "Starburster", inspired by a panic attack, and the Lana Del Rey-influenced string ballad "In The Modern World" illustrate the stylistic diversity of Romance: a mix of 90s alternative rock, Gothic Americana and Britpop. Frontman Grian Chatten deals more lyrically with universal emotions - from deep pain to existential fears.
With Romance in tow, the Irish are currently on a nearly sold-out UK and European tour. Fontaines D.C. are soon expected to perform an open-air concert in Berlin.
If you want to experience the most exciting post-punk band live, you should get your tickets quickly!
