Curator's tour with discussion with contemporary witnesses

On the last day of the exhibition, the Hohenschönhausen Memorial and the Berlin Wall Foundation invite you to an exchange. The curators Dr. Katrin Passens (Berlin Wall Foundation) and Stephanie Roth (Hohenschönhausen Memorial) will guide visitors through the exhibition.

The guest is contemporary witness Detlef Matthes, who was imprisoned in the GDR State Security remand prison in Hohenschönhausen at the end of the 1980s. His secretly taken photo of the border strip became the main subject of his interrogations in custody. The photo will be presented in the exhibition. Afterwards there will be an opportunity to talk to each other.

About the exhibition

Previously unknown historical photographs will be on display, made accessible to blind and visually impaired people through audio descriptions. The audio descriptions open up new perspectives on photography for sighted people. The photographs shed light on various topics relating to the division of Berlin, while two photographs provide an insight into the repressive system in Hohenschönhausen remand prison.

The exhibition comprises 17 stations, each 1.80 meters high, 60 cm wide and divided into three parts: base, console and photograph. The photographs hang in the middle at a height of 1.50 meters. On the console there is a tactile QR code for calling up the audio description, information sheets in large print and Braille and an indentation for placing the long cane.

The audio descriptions can be called up using your own smartphone; we recommend using your own headphones.Translated with DeepL
