For many people, Goethe's Faust is the epitome of a theater classic. Few works have been so often described as brilliant, profound, and ever-relevant. Hardly anyone gets through German class without reading about the scholar Faust and his deal with Mephistopheles.

On hardly a German stage has the so-called "Gretchen question" not been posed, and the young woman of the same name has not been made the murderer of her child. The crux of the matter was last revealed on the stage of the Stellwerk 20 years ago. So it was high time to revisit this absolute all-time favorite in theater history and see if it can withstand the questions of the times and the perspectives of a new generation.

Just as Faust makes a deal with the devil, an ensemble of young people makes a deal with Goethe's masterpiece, is seduced, taught, and betrayed by him. The stage becomes a multimedia study. From here, just as Faust did, the world is questioned and examined to see if there is still something holding it together at its core. Driven by the need to finally understand what makes Goethe's Faust such a powerful classic, a performance begins that is somewhere between a road trip and a search for meaning, complete with poodles, witches, and true love.
