"Blackbird" is back! Exactly a decade after its initial release, Fat Freddy's Drop asked a few acquaintances to remix a track from their outstanding album.
The result is an impressive remix/dub version that captures the essence of the original work while adding new and fascinating sounds to the New Zealanders' relaxed sound. Particularly notable is The KBCS' version of the title track (and accompanying video), which FFD claim is "hazy psychedelic funk in the garden. Hamburg grooves via Berlin's Sonar Collective." Above all, this version frees the band from the obligation of recording a new album when they would rather be on the road and partying on stage. That's how it was this summer when Fat Freddy's Drop toured Europe and performed at Berlin's Waldbühne together with Tash Sultana threw a party for almost five hours.
Since their debut album "Based On A True Story" - certified eleven times platinum in their homeland of New Zealand! - the collective stands for relaxed dub reggae, seasoned with groovy funk and targeted hip-hop beats here and there - and all without drums!
Producer and DJ Fitchie takes on the role of drummer. Jazz and folk influences as well as a bluesy brass section round off the mix. Add to this the extremely cool voice of Joe Dukie, and the result is expansive and relaxed masterpieces that still make you want to dance. Rumor has it that Fat Freddy's Drop are actually working on a new album. What is certain, however, is that they will come to Berlin again in 2024.
