Special exhibition

How do beliefs, norms and everyday objects relate to each other? Does religious belief necessarily mean a restriction of freedom?

With a view to the rules and conventions in the monotheistic religions - Judaism, Christianity and Islam - as well as secular beliefs, the exhibition shows a selection of such objects in combination with texts by scientists from different disciplines: sociology, philosophy, Arabic studies, Islamic studies, Judaic studies and Protestant theology.

Both religious and secular normative practices that structure and regulate public and private life require the use of certain objects.

The objects on display can be assigned to the contexts of “food”, “clothing and fashion” and “children's toys and education”. They show that rules and norms that restrict the freedom of the individual exist in all societies, but at the same time are constantly being questioned, renegotiated and changed.
