Scheherazade: A Tale in Music, Poetry, and Dialogue

"Scheherazade has always fascinated me," says Simone Menezes about the character from the story collection One Thousand and One Nights, which Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, among others, used as a model for his symphonic poem.

But the stereotypical portrayals in literature, music and film do not do justice to the legendary storyteller:

"Scheherazade is much more than that - she is the archetype of a female heroine."

Based on a new chamber music version of Rimsky-Korsakov's music, Menezes and the Ensemble K, which she founded, have developed a concert project that includes excerpts from One Thousand and One Nights, classical love poetry and newly written dialogues and takes a contemporary look at the legendary figure.

A discussion event on the evening before opens up further perspectives.
