Celebration – Resistance – Safety – Community: On April 30 and May 1, Radialsystem presents a two-day program of workshops and performances that interweaves dance, resistance, and self-defense.
May 1 marks a long-standning tradition of protest and resistance. Especially in the district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg – shaped by gentrification and social tension – leftist and feminist protest movements, peaceful family festivities, violent riots, police brutality, and exuberant celebrations all coexist.
The event "Dance & Resistance on May 1" engages with these contradictions. By connecting dance and resistance, it opens up the possibility of understanding protest as celebration, and of strengthening safety and community through self-defense and mutual support. The program offers participants tools for self-defense and empowerment, while exploring creative ways to connect with one another.
The second day of workshops culminates in a shared evening featuring two work-in-progress performances by Rocío Marano and Julia B. Laperrière. Closely tied to the themes of dance and resistance, these performances emerge directly from the materials and practices explored with participants during the workshops.
