The music doesn't want to slip without you
She was said to have been an energetic personality: Fanny Mendelssohn Bartholdy, later married to Hensel – witty, intelligent, and highly musical. A vivid portrait of this extraordinary musician is drawn from the correspondence that Fanny maintained with her far more famous brother Felix, which lasted for almost three decades until her death in 1847.
What is expressed in these letters: a tireless creative urge, a keen interest in the cultural life of the time, a deep sibling love – but also anger at the injustice of gender relations at the time. While her brother's career was consistently promoted, Fanny was left to "diligently educate herself for the only profession a girl can have: that of a housewife," as her father demanded.
Nevertheless, Fanny Hensel was not only a gifted pianist, but also left behind an extensive oeuvre of more than 460 compositions. A program for which Corinna Harfouch and Bernd Stempel have teamed up with pianist Hideyo Harada takes us into this music, but also into Fanny's world of thoughts.
In letters and diary entries, flanked by texts by Zelter and Goethe, among others, Harfouch and Stempel paint a picture of a strong woman who perhaps simply lived in the wrong century. Selected piano pieces by Fanny Hensel, complemented by two compositions by her brother, testify to this artist's extraordinary talent and provide insights into a body of work that still awaits discovery.
