In its Easter concert on April 21st in the Konzerthaus Berlin, the State Youth Orchestra is once again devoting itself to great symphonic music.
Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony "Pathétique" is one of the most moving works of the late Romantic period. Tchaikovsky also used a melody from the Russian Orthodox funeral liturgy here. A premonition? Just a few days after the premiere on October 28th, 1893 in Saint Petersburg, Tchaikovsky died at the age of just 53. Bohuslav Martinů also composed his Rhapsody Concerto for viola and orchestra with late Romantic overtones.
The Easter concert opens with a work that has only been appreciated late: in cooperation with the Berlin State Music Council's (Landesmusikrat Berlin e.V.) project "Musical Stumbling Stones"/"Musikalische Stolpersteine", the overture to the one-act play "The Broken Jug" by Viktor Ullmann (1889-1944) will be performed. Just a few weeks after completing the work, Viktor Ullmann was deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp. He was murdered in Auschwitz on October 18, 1944.
