MODE Topic MODE 2024/25 | Clothing as an expression of a political stance

The clothing worn by a ruler, made of precious silk fabrics and luxurious furs, adorned with gold, gem-studded jewelry, and complemented by magnificent weapons, visibly distinguished him from the crowd.

The choice of dress, jewelry, and weapons depended on the occasion and the person he was presenting. Carefully selected accessories indicated origins and family ties, conveyed political messages, and clarified alliances.

Using the example of the Saxon electors of the Albertine line of the Wettin dynasty, some of these aspects can be demonstrated with the help of the unique collections of princely clothing, jewelry, and ceremonial weapons preserved in Dresden.
