Triggered by the state’s femicide of the Kurdish woman Mahsa Jina Amini, Iran has experienced a sustained public revolt by women (and men) since 16 September 2022, which is unique in the Iranian history of protests. This time, the Islamic Republic is confronted with their prime enemy: women.

Using updated reports from activists and the media as well as chat protocols, video excerpts and testimony by witnesses, Alireza Daryanavard and Mahsa Ghafari recount the 40-year-long resistance of the Iranian society from the 1980s.

This chronology illustrates the influence which the largely invisible protests of the past decades have had on the current revolution.
