The Gethsemane Kantorei would like to get in the mood for Christmas with two symphonic Christmas pieces.
Inspired by Bach's Christmas Oratorio, the 22-year-old Mendelssohn wrote a chorale cantata based on Luther's most famous Christmas carol, "From Heaven I Come," whose enchanting and festive atmosphere is hard to resist.
Joseph Gabriel Rheinberger himself describes his Christmas oratorio, "The Star of Bethlehem," as a Christmas cantata. Advent expectations of nature and people, the angels' announcement, the shepherds' adoration, the path of the wise men and homage, Mother Mary at the manger - and finally the festive Christmas jubilation over the fulfillment of the promise, set to music for soloists, choir and symphonic orchestra, make the Christmas story a great "auditory cinema."
