Sacred Music in Dialogue

The Berlin a cappella ensemble Fugatonale and the Brussels vocal ensemble Kaïros invite you to an extraordinary concert that impresses with its juxtapositions and thematic depth. The focus is on Hans Leo Hassler's impressive double-choir mass for eight voices, framed by other works that relate old and new sound worlds to one another.

The double-choir mass "Missa Octo Vocum" by Hans Leo Hassler, one of the most important German composers of the Renaissance, is a masterpiece of this era and an outstanding example of polyphonic church music. It is characterized by its magnificent sonority and the artistic use of eight voices organized in two choirs. This structure not only allows for a rich polyphonic design, but also the possibility of creating impressive sound dialogues by spatially separating the choirs.

The mass is complemented by thematically coordinated works that are juxtaposed and, in their contrast and connection to one another, demonstrate the complexity of sacred music. For example, “Cantate Domino” by Hassler and Vytautas Miškinis, “Verleih uns Frieden” by Heinrich Schütz and Hugo Distler, “Exultate Deo” by Alessandro Scarlatti and Francis Poulenc and two motets by the modern Norwegian composer Knut Nystedt will be heard.

The juxtaposition of the works makes the performance an intellectually and emotionally enriching experience. It is not just a concert, but a lively exploration of the power of music to connect people and cultures.

Intercultural encounter and musical exchange

The project stands not only for musical excellence, but also for intercultural exchange. The intensive collaboration between the two choirs not only promotes technical skills, but also a strong sense of community. Different traditions and musical approaches come together, challenging and enriching the flexibility and creativity of the participants.

The vocal ensemble Kaïros from Brussels and the a cappella ensemble Fugatonale show together how music can express the same spiritual depth over the centuries, but always finds new musical ways.
