“Beyond Democracy” is a work without performers. There are no representatives, the spectators have to represent themselves. Together we exercise the ability of democracy to represent others and its limits. In Chile, people fought for democracy and struggled for their rights in the uprising of 2019. However, their attempt at changing the constitution failed – how do we continue?
Democracy is at risk, in Chile but also in Germany. If democracy ends, can this be imagined as a starting point? This performance invites the audience to playfully imagine its end and envision another system. As we can only create what we have already imagined, let’s ask: What lies beyond democracy? How do we understand democracy and our relation to it?
In their participatory performance, Sebastián Squella and Teatro Conjunto demystify the idea of democracy.
