The Berlin circus director Paula Busch was one of the great artists of the 20th century, comparable in her field to Marlene Dietrich or Maria Callas. Her parents founded the Circus Busch, whose Berlin circus palace stood on the banks of the Spree on what is now James-Simon-Park opposite the Pergamon Museum and was demolished in 1937 in favour of building plans in the Reich capital.

Paula Busch herself initially opted for a middle-class life. However, when the circus was on the verge of bankruptcy during the First World War, she left this security behind, took over the business as a single mother and began an unusual career...

‘AUFLEUCHTEN’ not only tells the story of her life, but also plays with Paula Busch's scenic innovations, which blur the boundaries between theatre and circus.

An interdisciplinary ensemble juggles, sings and argues its way through world wars, marriage crises and auditions, soars to the highest heights, falls low - and gets up again.
