The Architects' and Engineers' Association of Berlin-Brandenburg (AIV) cordially invites you to the event ‘Attack, Triumph, Terror - National Socialist Urban Planning in a European Context’.

The conference will take place on 22 May together with the Berlin Chamber of Architects and the Berlin Chamber of Construction and is an important examination of the findings from more than 25 years of research on urban planning in dictatorships.

Using a broad concept of urban planning, very different dictatorships have been analysed - the Soviet Union, Italy, Portugal, Spain and now Germany.

The insights gained in the process have enabled urban planning to be understood as an essential instrument of power under dictatorships, have opened up a deeper understanding of the planning and design disciplines and have opened up international perspectives. What appeared to be a historical issue 25 years ago has taken on a new relevance in times of global attacks on democracy.

Christian Müller, CEO of the AIV: ‘At a time when fundamental democratic values are coming under pressure worldwide, the conference provides valuable insights into the connection between urban planning and political power.’
