Gala with a "Night of Italian Opera"
The Verein der Freunde und Förderer des Stadtmuseums Berlin and the Museum Pankow present Italian operas played on mechanical musical instruments and shellac records.
The composer Giacomo Puccini died just over 100 years ago. His death marked the end of the glittering era of Italian opera. His works are still part of the repertoire of opera houses all over the world today. Italian opera had already become famous through the works of Giuseppe Verdi.
Many catchy melodies from the operas of Italian composers, including Ruggero Leoncavallo and Pietro Mascagni, two of Puccini's contemporaries, became evergreens. Around 1900, they were arranged for mechanical musical instruments. Later, original recordings could be reproduced on record.
With opera sounds from historical shellac records, arrangements for mechanical musical instruments and selected texts, they recall this glorious era.
