Alvin Lucier: TWINS / Music on a Long Thin Wire - a re-installation from 1999, realization: Hauke Harder.

This work is a classic of new music. The original idea came about in 1977, when the composer, together with physicist John Trefny, wanted to develop a modern version of the Pythagorean monochord.

After some experimentation, the installation took the form of a taut wire stretched across a large room or square and attached to tables at both ends. The wire ends are connected to the speaker terminals of a power amplifier, and a sine wave oscillator feeds the amplifier.

A magnet is placed at one end of the wire, and contact microphones on wooden bridges capture the sound of the wire and pass it on to a sound system that fills the entire room.

The wire plays itself: all changes in volume, timbre, harmonic structure, rhythmic and cyclical patterns are influenced by the tuning of the oscillator, fatigue, air currents, heat and cooling, subtle vibrations from human movement, and other factors. The piece is extremely meditative and elegant, an embodiment of "pure music" in its purest form.
