Physiognomy of an extreme right-wing party
The AfD – Alternative for Germany – doubled its share of the vote in the federal election on February 23, 2025, with 20.8 percent compared to the previous federal election, making it the second strongest political force.
Originally conservative-liberal, but to the right of the CDU/CSU, the AfD presented itself after 2015 as the main opponent of Chancellor Angela Merkel's refugee policy. Its platform and rhetoric have become increasingly radicalized and now unite both traditional supporters of right-wing extremism and right-wing populism.
The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution has classified parts of the AfD as "certainly right-wing extremist." In his lecture, Fabian Virchow will provide an overview of the AfD's development, its political platform, and its strategies.
