Galerie Gilla Lörcher is pleased to present grip n drift, a solo exhibition by Dutch artist Ab van Hanegem.
Known for his architecturally complex compositions, van Hanegem's work invites viewers into a spatial and dynamic experience. His paintings blur the boundaries between structure and gesture, drawing inspiration from topology and isometric perspectives to create "impossible structures"—mental and visual landscapes that challenge perception.
"As a viewer, one quickly has the impression of being more in than in front of the paintings and submits to the whirlpool of different perspectives," remarked art historian Constanze Musterer on van Hanegem's work. His intricate geometric constructions evoke elements of architectural drawings, yet traces of expressive, gesture-driven painting remain evident, adding depth and movement to the compositions.
Artistic Approach
"In my recent works, spatiality is no longer clearly oriented towards traditional perspective—horizon and vanishing point—but instead follows isometric principles. The dimensions in my work are deliberately ambiguous. Inspired by topology, I create spaces that can be explored both visually and mentally. These 'thinking spaces' allow for endless wandering, opening new pathways of perception and experience." – Ab van Hanegem
