The exhibition uses large-format photos to commemorate the events surrounding the Gethsemane Church during the Peaceful Revolution in October 1989.

35 years ago, on the eve of the 40th anniversary of the GDR, the Gethsemane Church became a center of rebellion against the SED regime. Members of opposition groups held a vigil demanding the release of people who had been arrested during anti-system protests in Leipzig and elsewhere.

"Watch and pray" became the slogan above the portal of the Gethsemane Church. The church was overcrowded for the evening intercession and information services. On October 7 and 8, the police and state security brutally attacked peacefully demonstrating citizens in the neighborhood, and more than a thousand women and men were arrested.

On the evening of October 9, the tension in the Gethsemane Church is particularly high until the liberating news comes from Leipzig: tens of thousands are demonstrating in Leipzig on the inner city ring and the security forces have withdrawn. The last chapter of the SED regime has begun.

The exhibition is a project of the “Watch and Pray – Freedom Now!” initiative of the Evangelical Church of Prenzlauer Berg North.
