Building a human tower in the MEK garden

This year’s V. Diada Castellera Internacional will take place at the Museum of European Cultures. Feel free to watch and cheer along!

Human towers – castells – are a unique tradition in Catalonia, with roots dating back to the late 17th century. This tradition combines culture, sport, and spectacle. Many Catalans actively maintain and promote this practice with passion and enthusiasm: there are over 100 so-called colles castelleres, often with hundreds of members. Their events and performances are a regular and essential part of cultural life in Catalonia.

In 2010, UNESCO declared this tradition an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Castellers, as the human tower builders are called, are now found not only in Catalonia but also in other countries around the world. Once a year, the international castellers come together to compete with each other.
