On 7 and 8 September 2024, the autumn sky in Potsdam's Volkspark will once again be imaginatively colourful: around a dozen kite pilots will present their unique kites and let them soar artfully through the air.

Depending on the wind conditions, the kites will be flying in the sky above the large meadow in the park. The participating professionals include many others:

  • Albert Trinks from the Netherlands has been painting portraits on the kites for a long time. He will be presenting an impressive collection of painted delta kites (single-line kites for light winds). These are paintings that he lets fly or displays on the ground when the wind is too weak or too strong.
  • Kite specialists Alicja and Szymon from Poland present stylish single-line kites with unusual designs.
  • Karl and Sara Longbottom are known for the excellent quality, precision, balance and flight characteristics of their kites. Their designs include all types of birds.
  • Andreas Höft, also known as Andy the Kiter, is a master of multiple kiting, in which he flies up to three kites synchronised and performs spectacular figures.
  • Franz Arz is an expert in Asian kites and presents Japanese kites he has made himself from bamboo and paper. He has published his knowledge and skills in his book ‘Asian Kites’.
  • The kite group Ready to Fly - Wittenberg, led by Matthias Klimke, will delight visitors with heart kites and a variety of other single-line kites parallel to the programme. If the wind flow allows it, giant kites fly despite the tall trees.
  • Team 4-Line consists of two men and two women. They stand parallel, relatively close to each other, and steer their four-line kites in a smart choreography with music to match.
  • Team Aufwind Extrem presents giant kites that inflate themselves. The kites are decorated with fun and creative line jewellery. If the wind blows strongly enough, they also show a biscuit family, rays and pigs in the sky.
In addition to the kite show, the kite festival in Potsdam offers a variety of other attractions:

Flying Colors offers kite-making workshops where adults and children can build their own kite under supervision (6 euro fee).

The colourful family programme includes breathtaking aerial acrobatics by Anna Ehrenreich, magical tricks with diabolos and flummis by Malte Strunk, funny ventriloquism by Wolfgang Schott and a cheerful puppet show by Ute Kahmann.

Other highlights include face painting for children, giant bouncy castles, juggling stations, wind games, games of skill, activities organised by the Potsdam Bornstedt volunteer fire brigade, a kite meadow for flying kites and a variety of culinary delights.

The kite festival in Volkspark Potsdam promises a weekend full of fascinating kite art and family-friendly entertainment.
