Together with Silent Green, Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz presents a two-day festival showcase on May 30 and 31, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the iconic experimental label Editions Mego. A landmark in electronic and avant-garde music, Editions Mego has shaped the landscape of sonic exploration, pushing the boundaries of sound, perception, and musical form.

Founded in 1995 by Peter Rehberg, alongside Andreas Pieper and Ramon Bauer, Mego emerged from Vienna as a pioneering force in experimental electronic music. Mego’s distinct aesthetic—formed by Rehberg’s deep knowledge of avant-garde sound, Bauer’s rhythmic influences, and Pieper’s software innovations—gave rise to a new era of computer-based electronic music.
With groundbreaking releases, inventive packaging, and a fiercely independent ethos, Mego cultivated a global network of exploratory artists.

In 2006, Rehberg evolved the label into Editions Mego, expanding its roster with visionary sub-labels curated by the likes of Stephen O’Malley, Jim O’Rourke, and François Bonnet. Though Rehberg’s untimely passing in 2021 marked the end of an era, his legacy continues to resonate through the artists and works that Editions Mego has fostered over the years.

Volksbühne will present a night of immersive performances by some of the label’s most pioneering artists:
Haswell & Hecker – UPIC Diffusion Session #24, Grand River presents All Above (Light design by Marco Ciceri, Acoustic piano by Andert Tysma) as well as General Magic & Tina Frank.

Haswell & Hecker – UPIC Diffusion Session #24Russell Haswell and Florian Hecker, longtime affiliates of Editions Mego, continue their radical exploration of sound as a material force. Their latest work delves into the possibilities of Iannis Xenakis’ UPIC system, a unique computer music interface that translates visual input into sound. Drawing from images ranging from news photography to microscopic molecular structures, the duo generates an unpredictable, synesthetic audio experience. Expect a labyrinth of frequency clusters, spectral shifts, and sonic alchemy that challenges the very nature of musical composition.

Grand River presents All Above, Light design by Marco Ciceri, Acoustic piano by Andert TysmaBerlin-based composer Aimée Portioli, known as Grand River, brings her emotionally rich and meticulously crafted electronic music to the stage. Influenced by minimalism and ambient soundscapes, her compositions unfold in cinematic layers, balancing rhythm and melody with an architectural precision. Accompanied by Marco Ciceri’s visual artistry and Andert Tysma’s instrumental textures, this performance promises a deeply immersive, multi-sensory experience.

General Magic & Tina Frank
Founding members of the original Mego imprint, General Magic (Andi Pieper & Ramon Bauer) join forces with visual artist Tina Frank for an audiovisual spectacle. Known for their unpredictable and stylistically unbound sonic approach, General Magic crafts intricate electronic compositions that evolve through glitch, abstraction, and rhythmic distortion. Tina Frank’s visuals—characterized by vibrant, pulsating patterns—merge seamlessly with the music, forming an intense, perceptual playground of sight and sound. Their latest work continues their decades-long legacy of bold experimentation.F

rom abstract frequencies to rhythmic deconstructions, from generative visuals to immersive sonic storytelling, this night at Volksbühne honors the radical vision of Editions Mego—where the past, present, and future of experimental music converge in an electrifying celebration.
