In autumn, you can include Sustainability playfully easy into your everyday life. Delicious seasonal produce lands on the table during harvest time. Nature puts on its brightest colours to conjure up a beautiful backdrop for bike rides and walks. And if the weather doesn't play ball, there are interesting workshops, shopping and other activities on the programme.
Tip 1: Zeit Wissen Kongress - Courage for Sustainability
Under the beautiful motto "Courage for Sustainability", Zeit Wissen is organising a congress at the Alte Münze. Here you can see well-known faces such as Andreas Sentker and Eckhart von Hirschhausen as panellists for expert panels in which current climate protection measures are discussed. There is hardly any other place where you have the opportunity to get all the background information and current debates on the topic in the shortest possible time. The versatility of the participants from science, business, civil society and politics is particularly impressive.
When: 26 September
Where: Alte Münze Berlin, Molkenmarkt 2, Mitte
Tip 2: Even more science at Science Week
The Berlin Science Week is a must for anyone interested in ecological and social sustainability. The programme includes numerous events from a wide range of disciplines. The main venues this year are the CAMPUS at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (especially on the first and second of November) and the FORUM at Holzmarkt 25. Under the heading "Common Ground", the main focus will be on disinformation and polarisation in society.
When: 1 to 10 November
Where: Various locations in Berlin
Tip 3: Make the most of the harvest season
Eating sustainably is best achieved with local and seasonal products. This reduces transport distances and your money goes to local farmers. In autumn, it's time to head to Weekly markets or - if the weather doesn't play along - to the beautiful Market halls in Berlin. Why not buy a bright orange pumpkin or juicy chestnuts at the Schöneberger Kürbisfest. And if you don't like cooking yourself, visit the many Berlin restaurants that emphasise seasonal produce.

Tip 4: Visit the carnival for the future
Berlin is known for its Carnival of Cultures, which takes place every year in May. But have you heard of the carnival for the future? It consists not only of a colourful street parade, but also of accompanying workshops and educational events that deal with environmental issues. In the run-up to the carnival, there will be a number of events where you can make imaginative props for the parade from recycled materials.
When: 5 October
Where: Artistania, Neckarstraße 19, Neukölln
Tip 5: Collect seeds for trees of the future
Every year, the park gardeners collect seeds from vital trees in the Green World Heritage Site of Potsdam's Sanssouci Park in order to replenish the tree population in suitable places. You can help and at the same time learn a lot about the trees and the challenges posed by climate change and pests. And, of course, you will also learn how to recognise healthy trees and their seeds.
When: 12 October
Where: Sanssouci Park - Sanssouci Palace, Potsdam, Meeting point: Chinese House
Tip 6: Take autumn walks
When there's no storm outside and autumn is showing its golden, sunny side, an autumn walk is the best idea. You can't help but smell the autumn scent just thinking about it. We have put together the most beautiful routes for a successful walk for you in our blog article.
Tip 7: Do handicrafts and take part in workshops
In the cooler months of the year, you can finally dedicate yourself to DIY projects again. The NochMall and the Haus der Statistik regularly host workshops. Whether upcycling, repair or other exciting ideas, tinkering and crafting can also lead to the first Christmas presents. How about a reusable Advent calendar, for example?
Here are a few creative workshop recommendations:
- Cyanotype workshop on 17. and 18 October
- Textile upcycling workshop for children and young people on 23 October
- Workshop of sustainable art from 23. to 25. October
Tip 8: Go on a sustainable shopping spree
Since an Advent calendar also needs to be filled and it's wise to start looking for the first Christmas presents, go shopping now. This way you'll buy meaningful gifts and not last-minute rubbish. We have here for recommendations on sustainable shopping. Flea markets are still taking place in autumn, you just need to wrap up a little warmer. But the Spree is also an ecosystem. This themed evening at the Humboldt Forum approaches the river from an artistic and scientific perspective with a short play, musical accompaniment and expert voices.
