SO36
A Piece of Kreuzberg
Since the 70’s the SO36 club has made its presence felt on the scene and is one of the most famous clubs in Berlin. For a long time the Kreuzberg-based club was at the heart of the punk scene, hosting a variety of well-known bands such as Die Toten Hosen or the Dead Kennedys. Today there is an eclectic programme of parties and concerts such as Bad Taste Partiesand the Electronic Ballroom. But that’s not all: KiezBingo and the 1st Berlin Film Table Quiz are also hosted by the SO36 club in Kreuzberg. The name SO36 refers to the old postcode of the Oranienstraße.
Gayhane
The highlight is the monthly oriental party, Gayhane, which has offered a home for lesbians and gays with Turkish and Arabic roots for more than 15 years. The music is a mixture of oriental pop, often with Greek or Hebrew songs mixed in. The crowd is a colourful mixture of people of different genders, origins, sexual orientations, and styles.
Late at night, everyone links arms for the Turkish circle dance Halay.
Other queers events at SO36 include Cafe Fatal with ballroom dancing on Sundays, and Kiezbingo, which is held once a month and is hosted by the drag queens Gisela Sommer and Inge Borg.
Roller disco in the SO 36
Once a month at the SO 36, one can take a trip back in time to the 70’s and 80’s, because that’s when the roller-disco takes place; to the music of these eras one can, with own or on-site rented roller-skates, start skating and carry oneself back into time. DJs take care of the background music, and so nothing stands in the way of an entertaining evening.
