Tip 1: A gourmet picnic and table tennis in the park at Gleisdreieck
The park at Gleisdreieck consists of Westpark and Ostpark. The former freight station gives the park a special charm. The high line of the U-Bahn gives the place an urban ambience. On the many green areas you can eat still warm bakery products from a Turkish baker, garlic-filled olives, and other packed delicacies. If you need a little exercise after your feast, you can have fun on one of the beach volleyball courts or play table tennis in Westpark.
Tip 2: A picnic in the large Tiergarten
The large Tiergarten with its gigantic lawns is one of the top picnic areas in Berlin. Thanks to its size, you have a large choice of places to spread out your blanket and eat the delicacies you packed. Barbecuing in this zoo with water all around is not permitted, but playing Frisbee is allowed. While walking to the Victory Column in the middle of the park at the Großer Stern, you might discover squirrels, rabbits, and other small animals living in the park. There are also some statues, memorials, and the English Garden hidden in the green area.
Tip 3: Nature adventures in Treptower Park and on the Island of Youth
Treptower Park attracts many young people every day. The green areas and the immediate proximity to the Spree make it one of the top picnic spots in Berlin. The park also has a surprise in store: the Island of Youth is located in the middle of the Spree. You get to the island on a bridge across the river, where you can stick your toes in the water from the jetty or relax in a deck chair.
Tip 4: Picnic fun in Volkspark Friedrichshain
If you are travelling with children, there is a lot to discover for the little ones in Volkspark Friedrichshain. Playgrounds, splashing water, and the famous fairy-tale fountain provide variety and fun. The Volkspark also offers sports enthusiasts the opportunity to enjoy themselves. There are several areas from football, skating, cycling, to work out stations.
Tip 5: Games, sports, and a picnic on Tempelhofer Feld
Tempelhofer Feld is the perfect place for anyone who prefers going by wheel rather than on foot. The former airfield is one of the largest open spaces in Berlin. Wide, flat green areas are framed by asphalted paths. If you picnic here, you can watch the kite surfers, artistic skaters, and other athletes, watch birds, or just listen to the silence. If you fancy a barbecue, there are three barbecue areas available.
Tip 6: Watching boats on the Stralau Peninsula
It is not difficult to find a great picnic spot on the Stralau peninsula. The peninsula is surrounded by the Spree and Rummelsburger See. A three kilometre-long shore path leads you past a pretty village church from the 15th century. On the lush green meadows by the shore or under the leaf canopy of a chestnut tree, a pleasant summer day on the water will pass in no time at all. You can watch the passing sail boats while picnicking for hours.
Tip 7: Picnic at the water lily pond in Volkspark am Weinberg
You won't find vines in the Volkspark am Weinberg today, but there are enough grassy areas for picnics. A particularly beautiful place to stay a little longer in is by the water lily pond. While joggers are doing their rounds, treat yourselves to brownies dripping with chocolate or other treats.
Tip 8: A waterfall and mountain scenery in Viktoriapark
In Viktoriapark you are on the highest natural hill of the city, the Kreuzberg. So you can enjoy a great view while having a picnic. A special highlight, especially in hot midsummer, is a waterfall surrounded by large rocks. It ends in a small pond that provides a romantic backdrop for a picnic. In this green oasis, you immediately have the feeling of having stumbled from the city into the mountains.
Tip 9: Picnic on Peacock Island
If you long for nature, Peacock Island is the perfect place for an excursion. The small island idyll in the Havel, which you travel to by ferry, is under nature protection and is also part of the UNESCO world heritage. On your peaceful walk across the island you will encounter peacocks running free. There are even some water buffalo to admire. The pretty pleasure palace from the 18th century, located on the western shore of the island, is well worth a visit before or after your picnic on the island.
Tip 10: Sunbathing by Lietzensee
In the park at Lietzensee you can relax and enjoy your picnic - not far from Kurfürstendamm. Right by the shimmering lake is the Schillerwiese, which Berliners like to call a "chiller meadow". The name says it all; you can chill and sunbathe here too. You can get a cool drink in the beer garden by the lake or in one of the corner shops in front of the park.
Tip 11: Picnics and stroking wild boar in Volkspark Rehberge
Volkspark Rehberge, which is almost a small forest, is in Wedding. Spread your picnic blanket on the open spaces by one of the lakes. The grass makes for a perfect picnic spot in Berlin. There is also an animal enclosure with wild boars and deer and petting is allowed.
