Tracing the Berlin Wall

This section of the Berlin Wall Tour begins in the Mauerpark (Berlin Wall Park). A stretch of land where the border once ran, this park has become a recreational spot for many Berliners. Continue on the Berlin Wall Trail along Bernauer Straße towards Nordbahnhof to the Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer (Memorial on Bernauer Straße). This street became the showplace of dramatic scenes on 13 August 1961, the day the Wall was being constructed, as residents desperately tried to jump from houses on the eastern side of the wall onto the pavement outside, which lay in West Berlin.
