To and from the airport in Berlin
Taxis are usually available at the taxi stops at train stations and at BER airport. Tip: At Berlin BER Airport, you should go to the designated taxi stop. This will help you avoid being taken by fake taxi drivers who charge inflated prices. You can recognise genuine taxis by a Berlin licence plate and the licence number on the back of the vehicle's rear window. Licence numbers higher than 8,000 do not exist in Berlin. To get from your hotel to the airport, you can also order a taxi via the reception desk at your hotel, call it yourself or use apps.
Berlin taxi fares
Since November 2022, the basic price has been 4.30 euros and the price per kilometre between 2.10 euros and 2.80 euros. Standing and waiting times are charged at 33 euros per hour. This means that the fare can be calculated relatively accurately before the journey begins. You can use the tariff calculator to determine your approximate fare on the Taxi-Portal Berlin website. Surcharges must be paid for large-capacity taxis and bulky luggage. As a rule, waiting times caused by traffic should not affect the fare, as the taximeter only calculates the time fare after a two-minute delay.
Short-distance taxi
If you only want to travel a short distance, you can hail a taxi directly on the street. The price for a so-called short trip with a Berlin taxi is 6 euros for 2 kilometres. Please let us know when you start your journey that you would like to travel a short distance. The short-distance fare can only be used for taxis that wave to you and only for a distance of 2 kilometres without stopping.
Price interpretation for standard routes in Berlin
The price may vary depending on the number of people and the amount of luggage or bulky luggage. Unless otherwise requested by the guest, the driver is obliged to take the shortest route.
Paying in the taxi
If possible, you should have small notes with you, as taxi drivers are not obliged to carry large amounts of change. Payment by credit or debit card should now be possible in all taxis.
Receipt for the taxi journey
Request a receipt. This is important in case you forget something in the taxi. This allows you to trace which taxi you were taken in. The receipt also serves as evidence in the event of a fare discrepancy. Make sure that the receipt contains the following information:
- Company address
- Licence number (usually pre-stamped, number must match the number at the bottom right of the rear window)
- Fare
- Date
- Route
- Signature
Booking a taxi in Berlin via app
It is now possible to request conventional taxis via app. Some taxi companies have set up their own apps for this, but there are also large providers such as FreeNow. The Uber service is also available in Berlin. Uber drivers are private individuals who have not passed a taxi driver exam. In this model, the price of the journey is already fixed before the journey and cannot change. You cannot get a receipt from the Uber driver, but the details of each journey are recorded in the app.
