Those who graduate from a music college today are well-trained, technically brilliant, highly motivated, and artistically curious. These are good prerequisites for orchestral musicians – but not enough. In addition to mastering the instrument, the profession also requires the ability to become part of a group, to contribute one's individual musicality to the collective orchestra, and to prepare optimally and time-efficiently for new repertoire.

For this reason, the DSO's Ferenc Fricsay Academy has been committed to training young musicians for 27 years. After successfully completing their audition, ten young musicians each have two years of practical experience, learning about and contributing to the work of a professional orchestra: through radio and CD recordings, symphony and chamber concerts.

More than just orchestral playing

Three DSO colleagues, violinist Jakob Encke, cellist Leslie Riva-Ruppert, and double bassist Matthias Hendel, are available to provide advice and support in all aspects of orchestral life. The academy members participate in workshops to prepare for orobie performances, receive instruction from section leaders, and also devote themselves intensively to chamber music – the best school for sensitive musical communication. In June, they can be heard performing alongside members of the DSO in a chamber concert.
