On International Museum Day
Spandovia Sacra, the museum of the history of the Reformation at St. Nikolai in Berlin-Spandau, has been housed in a half-timbered building dating back to the Middle Ages on Reformation Square since 1994.
A special treasure is the old church library with over 2600 volumes. The oldest book is a gospel manuscript from 1447 and there are also several incunabula in the collection. Around 260 prints date from the 16th century, with the largest group of holdings being 17th and 18th century prints.
The St. Nikolai parish in Spandau has one of the few church libraries in Brandenburg whose holdings have been preserved for centuries without major loss. All phases of the cultural development of Brandenburg-Prussia - the Lutheran Reformation, the change of denomination in 1613, the rise of Huguenot intellectualism and the Enlightenment - left their mark, so that the library itself can be considered a cultural monument.
The book collection is primarily open to researchers. Today, however, everyone is welcome to visit the historic church library of St. Nikolai in Berlin-Spandau from 3 to 6 pm.
