50 years of the Berlin Sculptors' Symposium at Steinbruch Reinhardtsdorf

To mark the half-century anniversary, the Amalienpark - Raum für Kunst gallery is showing works created during the symposia in Reinhardtsdorf. The artists present exclusively sculptures made of Reinhardtsdorf sandstone and works on paper, most of which are thematically related to the quarry.

In 1974, the sculptor Karl Möpert initiated the first symposium, which has now been held annually for more than 50 years. The patron at the time was the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR, based in Berlin. Seven to ten sculptors from Berlin and the districts of the GDR took part in each symposium. Guests were also invited from Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Finland and Austria.

The Cultural Fund of the GDR supported the symposium with scholarships, costs for accommodation, stone material, tools and transportation. VEB Elbenaturstein, which at the time was also a place of work experience for sculpture students from the Dresden and Berlin art academies, became a partner of the symposium.

Each participant had 1/3 cubic meter of stone at their disposal, which could be freely worked on without a theme being specified. The works remained the property of the artists. Some of them are now in various museums in Germany.

From 1991, the symposium was continued for four weeks in June with its own funding and the support of the Saxon Sandstone Works. When the sculptor Karl Möpert retired in 2010 for health reasons, the sculptor Marguerite Blume - Cardenas, who had been actively involved in the symposium since its inception, took over the organization until today.

During the remaining summer months, students from the Dresden University of Fine Arts, the Berlin Weißensee School of Art and Burg Giebichenstein Halle, as well as invited artists and members of the Neuer Sächsischer Kunstverein, took advantage of the good working conditions created in the quarry.

Sculptors from Berlin and Dresden organized international youth and intergenerational projects with the municipality of Reinhardtdsdorf, the results of which still adorn various locations in the area today. Today, a sculpture trail connects these stone sculptures in the landscape in and around Reinhardtsdorf.
