Expert tour with General Director Prof. Dr. Christoph Martin Vogtherr, SPSG

Watteau's career coincided with a period of great upheaval in France. After a long reign, Louis XIV died in 1715. The modernization that followed in the Régence period led to the introduction of paper money and a new, dynamic financial system.

It was based on the future development and exploitation of the French colonies in America. Many people became rich through speculation on transatlantic brokerage - Watteau himself had also invested successfully.

The tour follows the traces of speculation, banking crises and colonial trade in Watteau's paintings.
