Expert guided tour with garden curator Katrin Schröder and garden curator Dr. Jörg Wacker, both SPSG
There are still some traces of the magnificent Palm House, which was built on Peacock Island in 1830 but unfortunately burned down completely in 1880. The fire also destroyed the valuable stock of plants that the house had actually been built to house for the winter.
- Which plants were these, how did they once reach Peacock Island and what stories about their import and use did they bring with them?
- Did plants from the southern hemisphere, such as the fan palm, the turtle plant, the palm fern or the strelitzia, inspire the Prussian court gardeners?
The tour explores the history of plants and gardens on the route between the nursery, the rose garden and the site of the former palm house on Peacock Island.
