Special opening of the Norman Tower on the Ruins Hill
The Norman Tower on the Ruinenberg is one of the most beautiful historical vantage points in Potsdam. The all-round view captures a panorama that stretches from the little castle on Peacock Island across Sanssouci Park to Wilhelmshöhe near Werder. During a special opening, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy this view.
The Norman Tower on Ruinenberg, which is almost 23 meters high and modeled on a medieval watchtower, was built in 1846 under King Frederick William IV of Prussia. At the same time, Peter Joseph Lenné was able to expand the Sanssouci Park around the Ruinenberg and the fields of the Bornstedt estate.
In the mid-18th century, Frederick the Great had already had a water basin built on the Ruinenberg to feed the fountains in Sanssouci Park. He surrounded the basin with an elaborate arrangement of colossal columns, a Doric round temple and a pyramid reflected in the water, a ruin wall modeled on ancient theaters, and a natural backdrop of trees. The Potsdam Hill of Ruins was one of the earliest landscape settings on the European continent, influenced by England.
