In his social novel "L'Adultera" (The Adulteress), Fontane depicts fundamental human nature with a keen eye. It is the story of a young woman living in an unhappy marriage who plunges into an affair to fill her inner emptiness.
In contrast to Effi Briest from Fontane's other great novel, she ultimately takes her fate into her own hands. Her development into a strong, self-determined personality gives the story a modern twist and a happy ending.
In her paper theater, singer and musician Ulrike Richter presents a chamber play of selected scenes with backdrops based on paintings from the late 19th century—including works by Berlin painters Adolph Menzel, Carl Blechen, and Max Liebermann. She also sings and plays songs arranged for the lever harp based on melodies by Richard Wagner, Robert Schumann, and other composers.
